It’s never too late to change our ways…
Our ability to change habits evolves throughout life, and it’s especially different after our mid-sixties.
When we were younger, it felt like we had all the time in the world to start new routines and build healthier habits. But as the years passed, many of us began to believe that change wasn’t necessary—or that it was simply too late.
By the time we hit our mid-sixties, phrases like “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” might have started to ring true. We told ourselves that our habits were too deeply set, too much a part of who we are. I’m sure many of us have had the thought, “I’ve lived this way for so long—can I really change now?” The idea of stepping out of the routines we’ve spent decades building can feel overwhelming, even unnecessary.
Maybe you’ve asked yourself, “What difference can it make at this point?” or “Isn’t it too late for me?” These thoughts are common and understandable—they often come from a mix of comfort in our routines, fear of failure, or simply not knowing how much of a difference change can make. It’s easy to assume that altering our diet or exercising more won’t have a big impact or that the damage from past choices is irreversible. But here’s the truth: it’s not too late.
Our bodies and minds are far more adaptable and resilient than we often believe, no matter how old we are. Research shows that even in our seventies and eighties, adopting new habits can transform our health and quality of life. Adding just a bit of physical activity—like a daily walk—can improve balance, reduce the risk of falls, and lift our mood. Shifting to a more nutrient-rich diet can give us more energy and lower the chances of developing chronic illnesses.
What makes change possible is the belief that we can do it, and the support we get from those around us—whether it’s family, friends, or even a coach. Starting small, celebrating the little wins, and focusing on how good these changes make us feel right now can make it less intimidating and more rewarding.
At this stage in life, we’ve gained so much wisdom and perspective. These years are an opportunity to redefine what matters to us and to care for ourselves in ways that ensure we enjoy the health, independence, and happiness we deserve. The truth is, it’s never too late to make that happen.
